The drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara feels more like a cultural journey rather than just a transfer between two cities. Unlike a quick flight, the road trip allows you to soak in Nepal's diverse landscapes and daily life at a slower pace. Leaving the bustle of Kathmandu behind, the road climbs past Satungal and crosses Nagdhunga, the western gateway of the valley. The scenery keeps shifting, with green hills, terraced fields, and river valleys unfolding along the way. A memorable stop comes at Mugling, where the Trisuli and Marsyangdi rivers meet, creating a vibrant junction. Many travelers take a detour to the sacred Manakamana Temple, perched high on a hill and reached by a 10-15 minute cable car ride. Dedicated to the "wish-fulfilling Goddess," this temple carries legends dating back to the 17th century. The cable car offers sweeping views of the Trisuli River and, on clear days, glimpses of the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges. The day ends with arrival at Pokhara, where you will be escorted to a designated hotel, where you will rest for the night.

Today officially begins your trekking adventure, blending a calm start with a challenging finish that sets the rhythm for the days ahead. After a scenic drive to Nayapul, the trail follows an easy, level path to Birethanti, a riverside village where trekkers register their permits before continuing deeper into the Annapurna region. The route then gradually ascends through small settlements and farmlands toward Tikhedhunga, offering glimpses of rural life along the way. The real test of the day arrives with the steep climb to Ulleri, a legendary staircase of more than 3,200 stone steps. This uphill push is both physically demanding and mentally challenging, which is a rite of passage for anyone on the Poon Hill trail. At the top, Ulleri greets trekkers with its peaceful charm and, on clear days, sweeping views of Annapurna South and Hiunchuli. Your effort is rewarded with a sense of accomplishment and the first close encounter with the high Himalayas. Guide's Tip: Take the Ulleri climb at a steady pace and prepare in advance with stair training. Don't forget to carry your ACAP permit, which is checked at Birethanti.

This day unfolds with a steady climb that takes you deeper into the heart of the Annapurna region. Leaving the teahouse at Ulleri behind, the trail ascends gradually with occasional glimpses of snowcapped peaks peeking through the canopy. The walk feels less punishing than the Ulleri staircase, but it still requires stamina as the path continues upward. Villages like Banthanti and Nangethanti offer rest stops along the way, where trekkers often take a break to enjoy a meal and a warm beverage. After several hours of walking, you finally reach Ghorepani, a charming Gurung and Magar settlement perched at 2,874 meters. This village is not only a cultural highlight but also the perfect staging point for the famous Poon Hill sunrise hike. On clear days, Ghorepani offers awe-inspiring views of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and Nilgiri, hinting at the grandeur awaiting the next morning. Guide's Tip: Carry extra layers, as Ghorepani is cooler due to its higher altitude, and start early to enjoy a more relaxed pace through the forest.

The day combines an unforgettable sunrise at Poon Hill with a long yet scenic hike to Tadapani. The adventure begins before dawn, with a steady climb from Ghorepani to the 3,210-meter summit of Poon Hill. Walking under the stars with only headlamps lighting the way builds anticipation for what awaits at the top. As the first light spreads across the sky, the panoramic view comes alive with the towering giants like Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre, Hiunchuli, and Nilgiri. This 360-degree Himalayan vista is one of Nepal's most iconic views and a well-earned reward for the effort of the past days. After soaking in the sunrise and capturing photos, trekkers return for breakfast. The second half of the day brings another rewarding challenge as you make your way to Tadapani. The trail passes through rhododendron, oak, and magnolia forests, blooming in different shades of color. By late afternoon, the trek concludes in Tadapani, a quiet village with panoramic mountain views and a peaceful atmosphere. Guide's Tip: Dress warmly for the early morning hike, and carry snacks and water for the long forested trail to Tadapani.

After the demanding ups and downs of the previous day, this day offers a gentler pace with a mostly downhill trail leading to the beautiful Gurung village of Ghandruk. After the walk, you have plenty of time to relax and explore once you arrive. The path descends from Tadapani through dense rhododendron and oak forests, where moss-covered trunks and dappled light create a peaceful, almost magical atmosphere. Along the way, you may spot Himalayan birds or even langur monkeys moving through the trees. Reaching Ghandruk feels like stepping into a living museum. This well-preserved Gurung settlement is famous for its stone houses, terraced fields, and mountain views. Beyond the scenery, the cultural experience here is equally rewarding. A visit to the Gurung Museum provides insight into the community's traditions, history, and way of life. Guide's Tip: Though the trail is easier, the continuous descent can strain the knees. Using trekking poles will help reduce pressure and keep your pace steady.

Today marks the closing chapter of the trek, as you walk through the foothills with a return to the comforts of Pokhara. Although gentler than earlier hikes, the continuous downhill walk requires steady footing to avoid sprains and injuries. The path traverses through terraced fields, farmland, and traditional villages, giving a final taste of rural life in the Annapurna region. Distant peaks of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre accompany you along the way, offering a reflective backdrop for the journey's end. Passing Birethanti, you complete the final permit check before reaching Nayapul, where the trek officially concludes. From here, a scenic drive takes you to Pokhara through villages and small towns, gradually passing through the hilly road. By evening, you arrive back in Pokhara, carrying the satisfaction of completing one of Nepal's most rewarding short treks and memories that linger long after the journey ends. Guide's Tip: Use trekking poles for the descent and keep a relaxed pace—today is about savoring the final stretch, not rushing through it.
